Wild Dunes Weekend | Sept. 27-29: Local Events, Activities and Things to Do in Charleston, SC

Fill your final days of September with Southern food, striking Civil War photography, a free museum day, shopping and of course, some socializing! Here’s our picks for things to do this weekend in Charleston...

Throughout the Weekend

“Photography and the American Civil War” Exhibit Opens at The Gibbes Museum of Art
The Gibbes Museum of Art is pleased to serve as the only Southeast venue for the superb exhibition entitled Photography and the American Civil War organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which features more than 200 of the finest and most poignant photographs of the American Civil War. Hailed as a "magisterial exhibition" by the New York Times and "superb" by the Wall Street Journal, this comprehensive exhibition examines the evolving role of the camera during the nation's bloodiest war. The "War between the States" was the great test of the young Republic's commitment to its founding precepts; it was also a watershed in photographic history. The camera recorded from beginning to end the heartbreaking narrative of the epic four-year war (1861-1865) in which 750,000 lives were lost. This traveling exhibition will explore, through photography, the full pathos of the brutal conflict that, after 150 years, still looms large in the American public's imagination. The exhibit will run until January 5, 2014. Admission to the Gibbes Museum is $9 for Adults, $7 for Seniors, Students and Military, $5 for Children ages 6 – 12, and free for members and children under 6. For more information about the exhibit, visit the Gibbes’ mobile website or call 843-722-2706. Planning a trip to Charleston this fall or winter? Book our Civil War – A Nod to History vacation package for a private curator-led tour of the exhibit and much more.

SHE—The Ultimate Girls’ Weekend

Get your gals together for the ultimate girls’ weekend in the Lowcountry. Say hello to SHE Charleston, self-described as “a party, a culinary experience, a learning opportunity and a shopping spree, all rolled into one.” Charleston City Paper’s Amanda Merritt reports, “For three days, the North Charleston Convention Center hosts vendors, cooking classes, DIY workshops, fashion shows, and makeover sessions. Local celebrity Elise Testone will perform on opening night, HGTV’s Vern Yip will teach design on a budget, and a registered “lip reader” will be analyzing energies from lipstick prints — yes, we’re serious about that lipstick. “It’s really something for everyone, from every interest and age,” says marketing director Vicky Sexton. “SHE is a celebration of women that allows them to relax, shop, and be catered to.” Pick up something for yourself from clothing vendors like Southern Belle’s, Berlin’s, Swoon, Out of Hand, and others, or have a cheat day and enjoy food by Southern Season, Brown’s Court Bakery, Cory’s Grilled Cheese, and more.” $8/adult, $4/child. $5/students and military.
