Local Brewery Spotlight: Island Brews and Chews Craft Beer Festival in Charleston, SC

Feeling thirsty? Come October 12, there’ll be plenty of refreshing beverages at our first annual Island Brews and Chews Craft Beer Festival. Whether you come for just the day or stay overnight with our Charleston, SC Beer Festival Package, here’s a tip for all: bring your appetite, savor all the selections, and be sure to fill up with some locally-crafted beer. Discover the local Charleston brews waiting for you…

Holy City Brewing opened its micro-brewery doors in 2011, but the guys behind the brew, Joel Carl and Sean Nemitz, were crafting beer long before that in the bike shop of their Pedi Cab and Rickshaw business. As their ideas grew, they moved to North Charleston, and the team took off creating hand crafted ales and lagers.

Featured Brews:

  • Holy City Pilsner
Holy City’s first flagship beer is a custom version of a traditional Bohemian-style German Pilsner, with significantly amped-up hops, imparting a wonderfully sharp bite to what’s already a dry, crisp affair. Pairing chew: Salmon Salad Soft Taco

  • Holy City Pluff Mud Porter
Holy City’s second flagship beer, the Pluff Mud Porter puts a Charleston spin on the classic American Porter. It presents (and smells) like a classic porter, with subtle chocolate notes and a silky finish, but the medium body and tame ABV keep it refreshing at all times.
Pairing chew: Espresso Braised Short Rib & Bacon with Bacon Fat Mascarpone

Palmetto Brewing’s founders Ed Falkenstein and Louis Bruce brought the micro brewed beer experience back to Charleston, opening in 1993 as the first brewery to operate in South Carolina since Prohibition. Their beer is handcrafted in small batches at the Huger Street brewery in Charleston’s historic downtown.

Featured Brews:

  • Palmetto Amber
This brew’s complex malt character is balanced with just the right amount of hops, resulting in a clean full flavored beer.
Pairing chew: Wild Mushroom Ravioli & Pulled Smoked Chicken with Brown Butter Sauce

  • Palmetto Espresso Porter
This Porter’s robust full-bodied flavor comes from the dark roasted malts, accented with a coffee espresso roast courtesy of Charleston Coffee Roasters.
Pairing chew: Peanut Butter Ice Cream and a Chocolate Chip Cookie

The new kid on the block, Westbrook Brewing was founded by Edward and Morgan Westbrook as a craft brewery in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Their mission: to make the most interesting, drinkable, and generally awesome beer possible.

Featured Brews:

  • Westbrook White Tai
Inspired by the flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine, this beer is a twist on the classic Belgian witbier style. Instead of the traditional coriander and orange peel spicing regime, they add fresh lemongrass, ginger root, and a dash of Sorachi Ace hops. The result? A wonderfully refreshing ale with notes of lemon candy, citrus fruit, and a slight spiciness from the ginger.
Pairing chew: Rock Shrimp and Soba Noodles & Bamboo Shoots, Baby Corn, Soya-Seafood Broth

  • Westbrook IPA
A base of pale, Munich, and Carapils malts is just enough to contain the massive hop flavor and aroma packed into this highly drinkable IPA. A blend of four American hop varieties is added four times in the kettle and twice in the fermenter for a complex and layered hop experience. Pairing chew: Herbed Gnocchi, Hot Italian Sausage & Spicy Tomato Gravy

Frothy Beard Brewing Company grew out of a friendship between owners Michael Biondi, Steve McCauley and Joey Siconolfi. After meeting in upstate South Carolina, this trio moved to Charleston and starting brewing in North Charleston.

Featured Brews:

  • Frothy Beard Zinigiber Pale Ale
Substituting fresh ginger for a hop addition gives this pale ale a nice sweet and spicy flavor.
Pairing chew: House Smoked Skirt Steak with Curried Blue Cheese Crema

  • Frothy Beard Boardslide Rye
Rye comprises 50% of the grain bill giving the beer a rich spicy rye bread character. Dark amber in color. A German hefeweissen yeast accentuates the rye with its spicy ester profile.
Pairing chew: Garlicky Shrimp Skewer with Lemon Butter Sauce
