Explore Charleston, SC and Isle of Palms with Bicycle Rentals at Wild Dunes Resort

Explore the Isle of Palms and the Resort by the area’s favorite mode of transportation – bicycles!  See the best trails and insider riding tips from the Bike Shop Manager, Dave Luebchow.

Getting into vacation mode here is as easy as, well, riding a bicycle. With a five mile path looping through the Resort, an abundance of racks, and a biker-friendly attitude, the best way to see the island is by two wheels. Dave Luebchow, manager at the bike Shop in the Tennis Center, can attest to that. “Most people take rentals for the entire week, because it’s the best way to get around the island,” he says. Here, Luebchow shares his favorite stops.

Beach Time

Taking a left out of the Tennis Center along the loop’s main three miles and heading down Palmetto Drive, bikers can cut down to the Grand Pavilion Café & Bar. In the summer, it hosts live entertainment and tropical-themed happy-hour specials. Park right on the beach for the rest of the afternoon, or continue along Palmetto Drive toward the back half of the palm tree–lined Links golf course.

Quick Bite

After a mile ride, The Sand Bar is another favored spot, especially for Sunday brunch, where Southern cuisine comes in the form of pimento mac and cheese and crab cakes Benedict. Luebchow suggests grabbing a Tabasco-infused Bloody Mary topped with pickled okra while watching golfers tee off from the 14th hole.

Dream Houses

Just across the street, the main road of Ocean Point snakes through a gated community of Old Florida–style mansions to “house dream, not house search,” as Luebchow calls it. Since it is a private community, he suggests hitting the beach between the 17th and 18th holes to get a better view.

Natural Landscape

Back on the loop along Back Bay Drive, Marsh Island Drive between the 4th and 18th greens is where deer and egrets can be seen mingling among the sea grass in this swampy area. It’s the best place on the Resort to go bird-watching for unique species like neo-tropical songbirds.

Shop Stop

Finish the loop at Hudson’s Market in the Village Plaza for all the standard sundries, plus fresh-baked breads and desserts.

In Town

For those looking to extend their ride off property, a 1.5-mile cruise on 41st Avenue to Morgan Creek Grill is a cool evening route. Bike paths are located off the main road, making it safe for the family. Try the Grill’s fried gator bites and oysters while watching boats cruise in and out of the marina.

On Sand

The term “beach cruiser” takes on new meaning here. “Check [with the front desk] for when low tide will be, then grab your flip-flops and go,” suggests Luebchow, noting that’s when the hard-packed sand makes for easy riding with the wide, deep-treaded tires.
